National Superhero Day (April 28th) is for honoring both fictional superheroes and real-life superheroes—those who risk their lives to keep others safe.  NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES  Real-life heroes put themselves in harm's way, and in circumstances where they may risk their lives for others, just as their fictional counterparts do. Some of these heroes have careers that put them into these scenarios, such as members of law enforcement, military personnel, and firefighters.  Other heroes may be everyday citizens who step up in moments of crisis and do extraordinary things. As we've seen lately real-life heroes are all of the essential workers who have the responsibility during these uncertain times to continue operations. Many of these people work behind the scenes without the general public realizing how essential they are to keeping society going. Who is your real-life hero? Take your favorite superhero to lunch and say thank you for all they do. Let them know that you appreciate them.  SERVPRO of Benton, Jasper, Newton & Southern Lake Counties employees are also real-life superheroes - essential workers working 24/7/365 to offer proactive cleaning services as well as everyday fire, water, and mold remediation services.

We are prepared to clean and disinfect your home or business, according to protocols set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We have years of experience in dealing with biological contaminants, and we will go beyond the scope of work that regular janitorial staff perform on a daily basis.

Staying Informed About the Novel Coronavirus COVID-19

Coronavirus Disease 2019 Staying informed regarding the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)

The hot topic of the moment is the uncertainty regarding the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19. Based on what is currently known, the transmission occurs via respiratory droplets. Transmission to persons from surfaces contaminated with the virus have not been documented. Per the CDC, “Transmission of coronavirus in general occurs much more commonly through respiratory droplets than through fomites. Current evidence suggests that novel coronavirus may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. Cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses in community settings.”

Follow the recommendations of the CDC to stay informed, protect yourself from illness, and take every day recommended preventative measures such as limiting contact with people who are sick, avoiding touching your mouth, nose, and eyes, staying home when you are sick, and washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Cleaning and sanitizing the frequently touched surfaces of your home and business is good practice. Since it is not fully understood the transmissibility of COVID-19 through environmental surfaces and objects, extra precautions should be taken to maintain a clean and sanitized environment. Many establishments are informing consumers of their increased efforts and preventative measures. We here at SERVPRO of Benton, Jasper, Newton & Southern Lake Counties have the expertise to assist any business, school, hospital, agency or individual with deep cleaning efforts for peace-of-mind. Our trained technicians use OSHA-approved cleaning and sanitizing agents.

Be smart. Stay safe. Don’t panic. Use a commonsense approach to prevent the spread of illness. Stay home if you are sick. Wash your hands frequently.  Stay informed.

Disabilities Awareness Month and Preparing for an Emergency

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

March is Disability Awareness Month in Indiana. There are 54 million Americans with disabilities. Adults and children with disabilities represent nearly one-fifth of Indiana’s population. The goal of Disability Awareness Month is to promote independence, integration, and inclusion of people with disabilities. March is also National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, and the owners of SERVPRO of Benton, Jasper, Newton & Southern Lake Counties has a special connection to disability and Cerebral Palsy with their youngest son.

For the millions of Americans who have physical, fine motor, sensory, medical, and/or cognitive disabilities, emergencies such as fires, floods, and other disasters provide additional challenges. Here are some tips to help you prepare emergency and contingency plans to protect loved ones with additional challenges and those that support them in the event of an emergency.

FEMA and the Red Cross have created a booklet for Preparing for Disaster for People with Disabilities and Other Special Needs - https://www.fema.gov/media-library-data/20130726-1445-20490-6732/fema_476.pdf

Since emergencies happen at any time and any place and can happen quickly, without warning, being prepared is your best line of defense. Get informed. Make a plan.  Communicate your plan to others. Have a plan for evacuation – the how to as well as the necessary supplies that will be needed such as medicines, oxygen, and durable medical equipment. Keep a record of all medical contacts and suppliers as well as the specifics of any specialty items or equipment. See if your community has as assistance program with which you can register. Maintain your plan regularly – it is essential to update your plan with any medical changes as they occur.

Being prepared is essential in any emergency but caring for someone with unique needs or disabilities requires extra thought and preparation. Hopefully you will never need to put your plan in to place, but the peace-of-mind of having one is comforting.
